LOWNDES Co. – No charges will be filed for a single vehicle crash that injured six individuals Wednesday morning on Georgia Highway 38 (US 84).

At approximately 7:57 a.m., Georgia State Patrol Trooper Kirk Lund responded to a single vehicle crash on GA 38 approximately .1 mile west of Lake Alapaha Drive in Lowndes County.

A white 1993 GMC van driven by Jacinto Tomas, 51, of Jennings, Florida was traveling east on GA 38 in the right lane. The vehicle experienced mechanical failure, and Tomas lost control of the vehicle.

The van traveled off the south shoulder of the roadway, striking a utility pole. After striking the pole, the van then overturned coming to a rest on its top facing east.

Additional occupants in the vehicle were identified as Angelina Diego, 51, Jaimen Diego, 21, Alex Macario, 32, Maria Pascual, 26, Juana Santis, 32, and Maria Tomas, 32, all residents of Jennings.

All occupants were transported to South Georgia Medical Center via Lowndes EMS for their injuries. Juana Santis was the only occupant uninjured in the crash but was transported with the other occupants.

Jacinto Tomas and Angelina Diego were the only two occupants in the van that were restrained.

The investigating trooper did discover the front right CV Joint was broken, causing the crash.

The eastbound lanes of GA 38 were closed for several hours due to a high voltage power line being attached to the utility pole posing a threat to the safety of the motoring public.

The roadway has since been reopened. No charges will be filed in this crash.

Early reports indicted some of the individuals involved in the crash were flown by helicopter to another hospital for treatment, but those reports were inaccurate. All individuals were treated at SGMC.
