JACKSON, Miss. – A man wanted after fleeing from a Georgia State Patrol trooper during a traffic stop Saturday eluded authorities again Wednesday in Mississippi.
John Wesley Walton, 35, of Naylor was pulled over by a GSP trooper Saturday afternoon on Old Valdosta Road just west of the city limits of Hahira. He reportedly ran from the trooper who was attempting to place him under arrest and stole a truck at a nearby residence, according to GSP reports.
U.S. Marshals in Mississippi were working on a separate case Wednesday when they noticed a suspicious vehicle at a home in Jackson. Marshals discovered the truck was the Ford F-150 reportedly stolen by Walton.
Walton was in the vehicle and refused to get out. He reportedly pulled away from the residence, nearly hitting a marshal in the process, reports WAPT.
The marshal shot out two of the truck’s tires. Walton then got out of the truck and fled on foot.
Marshals said there was no indication he was armed, but still consider Walton “armed and dangerous.”
Helicopters searched the area near the incident, and some local business were closed during the manhunt.
Authorities are continuing to search for Walton.
During the incident on Saturday, Walton reportedly gave the trooper a false name and date of birth. The trooper attempted to place Walton under arrest, but he fled on foot northbound on Old Valdosta Road. The trooper was able to catch Walton during the foot pursuit, but after a brief struggle, Walton was able to flee again on foot into nearby woods, said GSP Cpl. Chris Kelch.
Troopers reportedly discovered methamphetamine, a handgun, handcuffs and pepper spray during a search of Walton’s vehicle, reports stated.
In Lowndes County, Walton faces charges of Felony Theft by Taking Motor Vehicle, Felony Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Felony Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime, Felony Possession of Methamphetamine, Felony Possession of Tools Used in the Commission of a Crime, Misdemeanor Obstruction of Law Enforcement, Misdemeanor Giving False Name and Date of Birth to Law Enforcement and several traffic related Misdemeanors, according to GSP reports.
Walton will likely face additional charges in Mississippi.
