VALDOSTA – A grand jury has indicted a Hahira woman for the 2013 overdose of a Cook County teacher.

Rosalind Pettiford, 54, was indicted on charges of felony murder,violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act, possession of methadone with intent to distribute, possession of oxycodone with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, attempt or conspiracy to violate the Georgia Controlled Substances Act, use of a communication facility in commission of a felony, and two counts of drugs not in original container, according to reports from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

A Cook County grand jury handed down the indictments in connection with the death of Beverly Clyburn, 49, of Adel. Clybrn was a Cook County teacher who died in 2013 after she reportedly overdosed on non-prescription methadone, reports stated.

While Clyburn was on life-support, she reportedly received cell phone texts from Pettiford who was offering to sell Percocet, according to a released statement from CCSO.

Investigators reportedly found numerous drug-related messages on Pettiford’s phone after she was arrested.

Anyone who contributes to a person’s death can be charged with felony murder under Georgia law, but a murder charge resulting from a drug overdose have only been tried a handful of times in U.S. courts, according to CCSO.
