MOULTRIE — An overnight house fire has landed a Moultrie woman in jail.

34-year-old Ebony Sheffield is charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute after police found three pounds of marijuana, three scales and plastic bags, following a fire at a house located in the 1000 block of First Avenue, Northwest early Wednesday.

Sheffield was inside the home when the fire started but was not injured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Moultrie Police Department issued the following Release

An officer with the Moultrie Police Department noticed flames coming from the area of the 1000 block of 1st Avenue NW Moultrie. When the officer arrived, she discovered the residence of 1009 1st Avenue NW engulfed in flames, and later the discovery of approximately 3 pounds of marijuana.

Officer Sandra Matthews noticed flames coming from the residence of 1009 1st Avenue NW Moultrie and quickly called notified the Moultrie Fire Department. When Officer Matthews arrived she determined that no one was in the residence as members of the Moultrie Fire Department extinguished the fire.

During the post incident investigation, approximately 3 pounds of marijuana was discovered inside the smoldering residence and was still intact. The resident, Ebony L. Sheffield, 39, of Moultrie, Georgia, was arrested and charged with Possession of Marijuana with the Intent to Distribute.

Chief Frank Lang said, “Although the investigation is on-going, the officers and fire service personnel involved in this investigation embody the dedication and commitment all of our residents in this community deserve.”

Sheffield is currently in the Colquitt County Jail on the charges listed above.
