FORT BENNING, Ga. – Immigration officers from all across the country will soon be heading to a Fort Benning training facility that will be built in order to mimic urban areas, AJC reported on September 11.

The soon-to-be constructed facility is expected to cost upwards of $17 million, with 50 buildings ranging in sizes of 400-square-feet to 100,000-square-feet. Each house will be built to be “hyper-realistic,” with items such as fake passports, false walls, drug labs, and other scenarios that officers sometimes run into.

The facility will mirror the training already taking place at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility at Fort Benning.

The officers will participate in a variety of training courses, including hand-to-hand combat and undercover investigation, according to Lindsay Williams, a Public Affairs Officer for ICE.

Officers who attend the training program must serve as field agents for three years to qualify for the program and to be assigned to one of the 22 special response units.

Upon graduation, officers can serve in ICE’s special response teams.

AJC further reported the federal government is scouting for a southwest metro Atlanta area to build another facility which could house up to 500 undocumented immigrant children, according to a government request for proposal.
