The Grammys last night were all about the PERFORMANCES. And in between, they gave out, like, 2.6 awards. Some of the performances seriously ROCKED, though.
Sadly, that can’t be said about ADELE. There were a few problems during her performance of “All I Ask”. First, the show switched to a backup sound system right at the beginning, and it made the audio drop out for a few seconds. Even worse, she sounded out of TUNE. And there was a weird guitar sound. She explained what happened on Twitter after the show.
Quote, “The piano mics fell onto the piano strings, that’s what the guitar sound was. It made the sound out of tune.” She also said she was treating herself to a burger because of what happened. So, quote, “maybe it was worth it.”
LADY GAGA raced through a medley of nine DAVID BOWIE songs: “Space Oddity”, “Changes”, “Ziggy Stardust”,“Suffragette City”, “Rebel Rebel”, “Fashion”, “Fame”, “Let’s Dance”, and “Heroes”.
They even briefly dropped in the bass line from “Ice Ice Baby” . . . er, I mean “Under Pressure”. The energy was there, and Gaga was on point, but it felt like none of the songs got enough time or attention.
KENDRICK LAMAR’s incredible performance of “The Blacker the Berry” and “Alright” had a more intense vibe than Beyoncé’s Super Bowl Halftime show.
Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, Johnny Depp, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum blew the doors off the place in the first TV appearance by the HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES.
They played an original song called “As Bad as I Am”, followed by “Ace of Spades”, as a tribute to LEMMY from MOTORHEAD. They even had his hat, boots, bass guitar and Marshall stack onstage. They were introduced by DAVE GROHL.
JACKSON BROWNE joined the EAGLES for “Take It Easy”, as a tribute to GLENN FREY. Jackson co-wrote that song with Glenn.
Speaking of tributes, Bonnie Raitt, Chris Stapleton, and Gary Clark Jr. did “The Thrill is Gone“ to honor B.B. KING.
There were also tributes to MAURICE WHITE from Earth, Wind & Fire, and LIONEL RICHIE, who is NOT dead, but won this year’s MusiCares Person of the Year. Demi Lovato was the MVP of that one.
NATALIE COLE did NOT get a live tribute, and her family isn’t happy. She did anchor the In Memoriam segment, though.
Other highlights of the show included JUSTIN BIEBER still desperately trying to make facial hair happen . . . MEGHAN TRAINOR crying through her Best New Artist acceptance speech . .
SOFIA VERGARA shaking her stuff during PITBULL’s finale . . . STEVIE WONDER making a braille joke . . . and TAYLOR SWIFT possibly taking a swipe at Kanye West after winning Album of the Year, by telling women not to let anyone else take credit for their accomplishments or their fame.
And just two quick notes on WINNERS. Yeah, they were pretty much pushed to the back burner, but awards WERE given out.
Justin Bieber won his very first Grammy. It was Best Dance Recording for “Where Are Ü Now”. He has to share it with Skrillex and Diplo, but it still counts.
Taylor Swift became the first woman to win Album of the Year TWICE. And she mentioned it during her speech. That may have also been a dig at Kanye, since he’s NEVER won it. In fact, he has 21 Grammys, but they’re all in RAP categories . . . and he HATES that.
