BRANTLEY CO. — Campers and RVs are needed to help Brantley County families displaced by South Georgia wildfires.

Brantley County, GA — As catastrophic wildfires continue tearing through South Georgia, families in Brantley County who have lost their homes are figuring out how to rebuild their lives. While federal assistance to re-house people is still not available, donated campers and RVs could mean the difference between sleeping in a tent or having a safe place to stay in the immediate.

The federal government is responsible to provide assistance in emergency situations to ensure the safety and security of families—despite this, after each environmental disaster from the California fires to the hurricanes and ice storms in the South a cruel pattern of neglect results in the further deterioration of our living standards. When families were asked how they were getting by after losing their homes, many noted how they had no choice but to rely on motel rooms in neighboring counties, tents, or makeshift shelters.

Local residents, volunteers, and grassroots organizations have stepped in to help however they can. But the scale of the devastation has overwhelmed the limited resources available. Brantley County is one of the poorest in Georgia, there is no hospital and 32% of residents don’t have healthcare—three times the national median. At the same time corporations have been allowed to exploit the region’s natural resources unchecked. Companies like Nestlé have spent decades extracting massive amounts of water from underground aquifers, worsening drought conditions and increasing wildfire risk. Instead of addressing these issues, state and federal lawmakers are pushing for another water-intensive industry: data centers. These projects threaten to place even more strain on rural Georgia communities while giving nothing back. There have even been reports of people associated with the data center project are already asking to buy the land from people whose homes burnt down. 

COMMUNITY CALL TO ACTION:
Anyone with access to a camper or RV is urged to donate it to a displaced family in Brantley County. This direct form of aid can make the difference between prolonged homelessness and immediate relief.

While community aid is crucial, it only provides temporary relief. We demand the federal government provide necessary relief to the Brantley Community, who is owed this support.
