SAVANNAH – The Georgia DOT announces that the additional comment period for the Savannah River Crossing Project is now open.
Release:
The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) will host a Public Information Open House (PIOH) comment period starting Thursday, Feb. 27 for the proposed SR 404 Spur/US 17 at Savannah River Crossing Project (PI 0017183), which explores potential long-term improvement alternatives for the existing cable-stayed bridge over the Savannah River. Comments will be accepted for 30 days.
The public is invited to attend the in-person open house on March 13, 2025, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Coastal Georgia Center at 305 Fahm Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401. The purpose of this PIOH is to give the public an opportunity to review the project background and potential solutions as well as submit feedback.
The PIOH offers an opportunity for the public to not only review project materials, but also ask questions of designated subject-matter experts in attendance. There will be no formal presentation. For those unable to attend, materials and a comment form are also available on the project website at https://bit.ly/SavannahRiverCrossing.
As the fastest growing port in the nation, the Port of Savannah is a significant economic engine for the Savannah region, the state of Georgia, and the nation. However, potentially stifling future growth is the Port’s accessibility to larger ships. The proposed project seeks to address this limitation by increasing the vertical clearance of the existing SR 404 Spur/US 17 bridge to allow for larger cargo ships to pass beneath it. The project team is currently evaluating alternatives so that the project can proceed into conceptual engineering design and preliminary environmental studies.
Comments about the proposed project will be accepted until Thursday, March 27, 2025. There are several ways the public can submit comments on the project:
- Leave a written comment or speak to a court reporter at the in-person PIOH on March 13, 2025.
- Complete the online comment form located on the project website: https://bit.ly/SavannahRiverCrossing
- Email comments to project email address: savannahriverxing@dot.ga.gov
- Call the project hotline at 404-631-1526 to leave a recorded comment (please provide name and contact information)
- Mail written comments to the Georgia Department of Transportation; Attention: Eric Duff, State Environmental Administrator, 600 West Peachtree Street, NE – 16th Floor, Atlanta, Ga., 30308
