PUTNAM COUNTY, Ga. — “Was that another earthquake?” Sherri Postell Johnson posted on Facebook Thursday, October 9, 2019.

Johnson, a native of Adel who now lives in Putnam County, said there were two about 12 hours apart, though official reports from the U.S. Geological Survey say there was only one.

“The first one was more of a ‘sonic boom.’ We didn’t feel anything on that one,” she said. “The second one was close and rattled the house. We felt the house shake…sort of like if something ran into the house. One around 7:40 in the morning, 2.1 mag, and another around 9 last night? Maybe earlier. I think that one was a 2.2. It definitely was close and it felt stronger. Weird.”

According to an 11Alive report and the U.S. Geological Survey, a small, magnitude 2.1 earthquake was felt Thursday morning around 7:20 a.m. near Lake Sinclair in Putnam County.

The quake as located about seven and a half miles southeast of Eatonton, with a depth of a mile.

According to the USGS, 17 people from Eatonton, Putnam, and Milledgeville reported feeling the quake.

Though the word “earthquake” to Georgians seems foreign, they’re not as uncommon as you might think.
