NASHVILLE, Ga. – On the afternoon of Wednesday, December 12, 2019 a stabbing occurred near Harvey’s in Berrien County.

Nashville Police Department Detective Fred Busbin told Valdosta Today that one woman was stabbed but she is alive and in the hospital recovering from her wounds.

“We got called about 5:30 p.m. but the incident started at about 2 p.m.,” Busbin said Thursday evening, about three hours after they had apprehended the subject, 59-year-old Billy Lumpkin, who Det. Busbin said is homeless.

Busbin said Lumpkin had kidnapped one of the female victims, took her to a house across from Harvey’s on 215 E. McPherson Avenue, “tied her up with duct tape,” and “held her hostage for several hours.”

Her friend came looking for her about 3:30 or 4:00 p.m. and when she did she started calling her name and Lumpkin jumped out and grabbed her and he proceeded to duct tape her, too.

“She was cut repeatedly and then Billy took the initial victim to a separate house on E.Washington St. an he duct taped her and held her hostage,” Det. Busbin said.

“It was just an ole kitchen knife,” Det. Busbin said. “But it was bad.”

According to Det. Busbin, it was “an ongoing domestic thing,” for which Lumpkin had previous related charges for from about a month ago.

The victim was able to talk her way out and away from Lumpkin and went back to the first house to check on her friend. At this point she called 911.

The girlfriend had a defensive wound on her hand and was hit on her knees with a baseball bat. “We had outstanding warrants on him,” Det. Busbin said.

Lumpkin managed to allude arrest until Thursday when he and other investigators were in Valdosta working with Lowndes County authorities on another case and saw a man walking down Highway 41 North, about two miles at the Dollar General down from the Smokin’ Pig.

“I told the detective I was with, wouldn’t that be funny if that was Billy?” Busbin sad.

And it was. “I couldn’t believe that was him,” Busbin said.

They called in Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and he is now being held there on obstruction charges and will be transported to Berrien County for new charges of aggravated assault.

“That list is not all inclusive,” Det. Busbin said. “We are working on other charges.”

The injured woman suffered three or four lacerations on her head but they are not life-threatening. Both women are out of the hospital now.
