On Wednesday, Gov. Brian Kemp ordered that K-12 schools stay closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. Afterward, both Lowndes County Schools and Valdosta City Schools published releases about the closures. Each school system plans to continue providing meals for students and they encourage students to stay engaged with online learning resources. (See releases below)
Lowndes County Schools: Release
In an unprecedented move, Governor Brian Kemp announced today that all schools will remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. We will continue to encourage our students to stay engaged in the educational opportunities provided by our online and home learning resources. Our district will also continue providing meals for our students as long as it is deemed safe for us to do so.
We have been amazed by the overwhelming and fast work of our faculty and staff to ensure that the needs of our students continue to be met as we navigate this worldwide public health crisis. We have no doubt that this work will continue. We will be meeting with our school administrators to make future plans based on this latest announcement. We know without a doubt there will be more questions than answers right now, but the one thing we promise is that the best interest of our children, our community and our employees will remain at the forefront of every decision we make.
Please follow the guidance regarding social distancing and isolating as much as possible. Together we can slow and eventually stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community. It will take all of us following the guidance of the CDC, Georgia Department of Public Health, State of Georgia and Local Ordinances to win this battle, but together we can. Please be careful, wash your hands and be mindful of everything that must be done to prevent the spread. Take care of your families and stay home as much as possible.
We are all in this together; we will be stronger and better when this is over. Our hope is that we will have answers to your many questions in the coming days. While we know you are anxious for answers, we do not want to provide specifics until we are comfortable and confident in doing so. Please know that we will work to make this right, especially for the members of the Class of 2020. #OneLowndes
