VALDOSTA, Ga. — Several state representatives are pushing to legalize gambling and sports betting during the 2020 legislative session, according to WCTV.

State representatives believe that Georgia is missing out on profits that our neighboring states are taking full advantage. The profits gained from this potential proposal can fund areas such as affordable healthcare.

WCTV states that last year the House Economic Development Committee (HEDC) toured communities, including Valdosta, to explore what legalizing gambling would mean for different communities.

Mayor Scott James Matheson is not necessarily on board with the idea of opening Valdosta up to gambling and he is not alone. Some Valdosta residents also believe that the cons of the proposal outweigh the pros.

In order for the proposal to see the light of day, it would require a constitutional amendment or a two-thirds majority approval by both the House and General Assembly. If it is approved, it will then be put into the hands of the voters.
