Valdosta unemployment rate drops heading into new year

VALDOSTA – The Georgia Department of Labor announces that unemployment in Valdosta had declined heading into the new year.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that Valdosta recorded an unemployment rate of 3.1 percent in November, down seven-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 3.1 percent.

“As we prepare to ring in a new year, Georgia’s future is bright, said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “With holiday shopping and retail kicking back up, Georgia’s unemployment rates are dropping faster than holiday deals. Coupled with a soaring job market and a workforce ready to take on limitless opportunities, Georgia is well on the road to success.”

The labor force increased in Valdosta by 154 and ended the month with 63,354. That number went up by 963 when compared to November of 2022.

Valdosta finished the month with 61,379 employed residents. That number increased by 555 over-the-month and went up by 900 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Valdosta ended November with 57,400 jobs. That number increased by 200 from October to November and went up by 300 when compared to this time last year.

In November, initial unemployment claims decreased by 14 (-6%) in Valdosta. When you compare November 2023 claims to November 2022, claims were down by 41 (-16%).
