VALDOSTA— Valdosta State senior Ashley Lewis scored three goals Sunday in a 6-0 victory over visiting Auburn Montgomery. The Blazers improved to 3-3 on the year and 1-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while AUM fell to 0-6 and 0-2 in conference play.
Lewis recorded her first hat trick since scoring four goals against Spring Hill College on Sept. 29, 2017. Against AUM, Lewis had eight shots with six on goal and added an assist in the win. Senior Riley Tennant added two scores and an assist in the game. Tennant had five shots with three on goal, two goals and one assist. Freshman Amber Saunders scored her first collegiate goal in the game, along with her first assist.
Sophomore Samatha Blanford and junior Caroline Embler combined for the shutout, as Blanford earned her second start of the season, recording three saves and Embler finished the game with one save.
Lewis scored her first goal just 16 minutes into the contest with an assist from Tennant and then the Blazers found pay dirt once again in the 29th minute as Saunders scored off an assist from junior Kira Malpica. At the break, VSU led 2-0 and held a 9-5 lead in shots. Blanford made three saves in the frame.
Tennant scored her first of two second half goals just 38 seconds into the final stanza as Lewis assisted on the score. The Lewis and Tennant show struck again as Lewis scored her second goal in the 51st minute and then Lewis and Tennant scored in the 74th and 77th minutes respectively, as senior Taylor Snell assisted on the Lewis score and Saunders on the Tennant score.
VSU finished the game with 25 shots and 12 on frame, while AUM had seven shots and four on goal. AUM’s Chloe Kistler allowed all six goals and tallied six saves in the match.
The Blazers return to action Oct. 4 at West Alabama and Oct. 6 at Alabama Huntsville, before returning home to host West Georgia on Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. at the VSU Soccer Complex.
