LOWNDES CO., Ga. – Upon action of the Lowndes County Board of Education the Viking football playing surface has been named Joe Wilson Field. The stadium will now be known as Joe Wilson Field at A B “Sonny” Martin Stadium. The new name was revealed in a ceremony on September 20, 2019 prior to the Lowndes – Northwestern Miami game.
In 2019 the Vikings began their 54th year of football. The first ten years were uneventful. In 1976 Superintendent A. B. “Sonny” Martin recruited Joe Wilson to turn the football program around. Upon his hire Wilson made promises many thought impossible. He promised winning records, victories over rivals, and state championships. From an 8-2 record in ‘76, to a victory over Valdosta in ‘77, to a state championship in ‘80, the “Silver Haired Fox”, as Wilson was known, more than delivered on his promises. He gave us our beloved Plowboy and taught us to take pride in our program and to be proud of our heritage.
For thirteen years Coach Wilson and his staff led our Vikings to a 95-49 record with two (2) region and one (1) state championship. By naming the playing surface upon which he taught all Vikings to win we attempt to honor Coach Wilson for his many contributions to the Lowndes football program.
