Canara and Carter Earn Weekly GSC Honors

VALDOSTA – Senior Chelsea Canara finished off the final regular season of her collegiate career with a bang last weekend in Valdosta, Ga., and the Gulf South Conference rewarded her efforts with a GSC Player of the Week honor on Tuesday. In addition, Kathryn Carter was named the GSC Freshman of the Week for the third time this season.

Canara’s honor came on the heels of a 6-for-10 (.600) weekend that helped lead the Blazers to a critical three-game series sweep over North Alabama. Two of her six hits in the series were homers, which launched her slugging percentage to a stratospheric 1.200. In addition, the Blazers’ third baseman drove in five runs, scored five runs, and racked up 12 total bases. Her top performance of the weekend came in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader, when she posted a 3-for-3 effort at the plate, including a grand slam that fueled an 8-0 rout of the rival Lions.

The award for Canara provided a perfect bookend to a stellar career that began with the exact same honor in 2014, after the slugger notched nine RBI’s, a double, and a grand slam during the first weekend of her collegiate career.

Carter joined the list of weekly honorees with her third Freshman of the Week award after accounting for two of Valdosta State’s three wins on the weekend. Carter pitched nine innings and allowed just one earned run. In the series opener against UNA, she pitched a complete game for the 4-3, eight-inning victory.

Valdosta State now turns their attention to the Gulf South Conference Tournament, set to open up on Friday in Huntsville, Ala. Look for coverage right here at www.vstateblazers.com.
