VALDOSTA – In an announcement made by the league office Thursday, Beau Justice and Kenya Samone’ Dixon were voted on as two of 11 Gulf South Conference student-athletes to earn a spot on the 2015-16 GSC Fireseeds Winter All-Academic Team. In addition, the pair hoops standouts joined three other men’s basketball players and three other women’s basketball players to be named to the 2015-16 GSC Winter Honor Roll.
Justice, a sophomore out of Peebles, Ohio and new addition to the Valdosta State men’s basketball program this season, secured the honor after a sensational sophomore season that helped lead the Blazers to a first place finish during the regular season of GSC competition. Justice ranked among the top 20 scorers in the league with an average of 14.3 points per game, and his sharp shooting produced 20-plus point performances six different times during the season. Justice is currently pursuing a degree in Middle Grades Education with a 3.50 GPA.
Lady Blazer Basketball’s Samone’ Dixon made a splash at Valdosta State this season as a junior transfer. The Baton Rouge, La. native earned First Team All-GSC honors and was named Second Team All-South Region after a stellar shooting performance throughout the season that resulted in a league-best 41.7 percent shooting effort from behind the three point line. Samone’ Dixon’s efforts helped lead the Lady Blazers to a GSC Championship and complemented her hard work in the classroom, which produced a perfect 4.0 GPA as a Public Administration major.
The Gulf South Conference’s Honor Roll is made up of student-athletes who have established a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the classroom, and the Blazers and Lady Blazers represented Valdosta State well on the list of honorees. Three of Head Coach Carley Kuhn’s women’s basketball players joined Samone’ Dixon, including Sonya Franklin (3.30, Exercise and Physiology), Jazmyn McIntosh (3.14, Engineering), and Sunshine Walton (3.07, Exercise and Physiology).
Justice was joined by three other men’s basketball players to make the Honor Roll cut, including Jake Elliott (3.50, Pre-Med, Chemistry), Damian Young (3.33, Mass Media), and Josh Lemons (3.05, Management).
