RIO MAR, Puerto Rico – Fueled by a 1-under 71 round by Olav Zandveld and a top 10 performance by the remaining four Valdosta State competitors, the Blazers closed out the opening round of the UIS Island Getaway holding the top position at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico on Monday.
Zandveld’s effort placed him in a tie atop the leaderboard with Illinois-Springfield’s Nathan Goecks, and Davis Roche finished just two strokes behind with a 1-over 73 to stand alone in third place.
The remaining competitors for Valdosta State included Colton Godwin in a tie for fourth with a 2-over 74 effort, along with Jordan Long in sixth with a 4-over 76 finish. Matt Anderson rounded out VSU’s field of team participants with a 5-over 77 performance, while Jake Harpe closed out as an individual participant with a 7-over 79 score.
With a team score of 6-over 294, Valdosta State currently leads second place Illinois-Springfield by eight strokes and will aim to close out strong on Tuesday morning, when they tee off for the final day of the tournament.
