PENSACOLA – The No. 15 ranked Valdosta State women’s tennis team handled their business in dominating fashion over the weekend with a perfect 5-0 stint against Gulf South Conference opponents in Pensacola, Fla.
The Lady Blazers started the weekend with a 5-1 victory over Delta State on Saturday morning, which included singles victories for Josephine Jedrychowski at No. 4, Anke Poncelet at No. 5, and Joanna Lario at No. 6. The Blazers’ remaining two points came at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 win for Laura Ubeda and Sabrina Schmidt, along with a win for Jedrychowski and Daniella Barta at No. 3.
In the second of three matches on Saturday, VSU blew by the Lady Bucs of Christian Brothers with a 5-0 win. Poncelet andTaylor Vinge scored wins at No. 4 and No. 6 doubles, respectively, while the Lady Blazers swept CBU in doubles play.
VSU closed out the impressive display on Saturday with yet another win, this time against West Georgia late in the day. Ubeda and Schmidt took down Sara Watson and Jordan England 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, while Poncelet and Vinge fell 8-4 at No. 2. The Lady Blazers took a 2-1 lead into singles action after Jedrychowski and Barta toppled Shelby Brown and Sierra Brown, 8-4, at No. 3.
Schmidt defeated Taylor Lefton 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to hold momentum for VSU in singles play, while Jedrychowski and Barta closed out the match with wins at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
Action continued on Sunday morning, as Valdosta State took on the Lions of North Alabama. The Lady Blazers brought down their conference rival handily with a 7-2 victory and were led by Bea Morales-Hernandez at No. 1 singles with a 7-5, 6-1 win. Morales-Hernandez, along with Ubeda, Schmidt, Jedrychowski, and Poncelet, gave VSU five of their seven points in the contest, with the remaining points coming at No. 1 doubles for Morales and Poncelet, followed by a No. 2 victory for Ubeda and Schmidt.
The perfect weekend concluded for the Blazers against the Lady Choctaws of Mississippi College, which ended 6-0 in favor of the red and black. Hernandez teamed up with Poncelet again at No. 1 doubles for the first point of the day, while Ubeda and Schmidt continued their strong season with a convincing 8-1 win over Ashley Ochsenhirt and Karly Matthews at No. 2. VSU moved in front 3-0 with an 8-4 victory over Jedrychowski and Barta at No. 3, and Schmidt, Poncelet, and Barta closed out the match with singles victories.
