VALDOSTA – Marcus Sigmon made it two consecutive weeks for Valdosta State baseball to have a player recognized as the Gulf South Conference Player of the Week after receiving the honor on Tuesday from the GSC office.

Sigmon, a Troy University transfer out of Fort Pierce, Fla., delivered timely hits throughout a stretch of games last week that led to three wins over a single loss. Two of his five hits on the week came in the final innings of Sunday night’s extra inning battle against the No. 7 ranked Florida Tech Panthers, and each were highly influential in Valdosta State’s 8-7 victory.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Blazers trailing by two, the VSU’s infield slugger crushed a game-tying, two-run shot over the left field wall. The homer extended the contest to extra innings, and Sigmon struck again in the bottom of the eleventh with a walkoff RBI single through the right side.

Sigmon finished the week with a .313 batting average and racked up 12 RBI’s over the course of four games. The junior’s five hits, which included a double and two homers, led to 12 total bases and seven runs scored. He also walked three times on the week.

So far in 2016, Sigmon is hitting .286 with nine runs scored, six walks, and three home runs. He has racked up 14 RBI’s and struck out just once in 21 at bats.
