PONTE VEDRA BEACH — The weekend shaped up nicely at The Players Championship on Friday as a host of players put themselves in  position to challenge for the lead Saturday.

The Players is a star-studded event, yet many players believe some get more notice than their plan deserves.  One such player is Rickie Fowler, who despite massive sponsorship deals, has yet to win a professional tournament.

Fowler, who finished tied for third at 6 under par, spoke with Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman after his round regarding comments from fellow players that he is considering an “overrated” player on TOUR:

Fowler – “If I ever need any extra motivation out there – not that I don’t have enough already – but if there’s a point out there where I need something to think about, that’s a good little kick in the butt to get me going.”

Multiple Major Championship winner Nick Faldo had this to say about Fowler, “After the comments about being overrated, you can see that simmering inside him. If he can use that to his advantage, rather than over-revving the engine, if he can turn that to sheer determination… Because he’s found something in the putting last week and playing nicely.”

Fowler will have a chance to prove his critics wrong as he not only seeks his first tour victory, but what many consider the “fifth major” at that in The Players.  Saturday and Sunday will decide.
