A 14-year-old pedestrian was struck and injured in Valdosta Thursday afternoon. Officials say the minor was attempting to cross the intersection of Bemiss Road and Langdale Drive when he was hit by a vehicle. He was taken to SGMC for treatment and is considered in moderate to serious condition. The incident is still under investigation.
The Valdosta Main Street office has released its 24th edition in the series of the Downtown Valdosta Christmas ornaments. The 2016 ornament is red and features the Strand-Alamo Theatre building which is now home to Birdie’s Market. The ornament can be purchased at the Valdosta Main Street office on the first floor of the Valdosta City Hall Annex on N. Lee Street.
Mayor John Gayle and Valdosta First Lady Peggy Gayle will officially kick off the holiday season in Valdosta at the annual Christmas Tree Lighting, on Friday, Dec. 2, at 5:30 p.m. Attendees will enjoy a special visit from Santa Claus, as he assists with the lighting of the fully-decorated 30-foot Christmas tree located on the front lawn of City Hall.
A massive American flag was erected at a Ty Ty Nursery in Tift County Thursday. Tift County High School’s JROTC and the Moody Air Force Base Honor Guard were on hand to dedicate the new flag pole which stands at 80 feet high and the flag which is 30 by 50 feet.
Investigators believe the man who robbed a Tifton bank November 9th may be involved in another bank hold up. The robber, dressed in a button up shirt and Columbia jacket, walked in the SunTrust on 2nd Street and demanded money. According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, the robber may have visited a Tifton jewelry store prior to the robbery. Authorities also believe he may have been involved in the October robbery of a Chase Bank in Alpharetta.
The Lowndes Associated Ministries to People held a mac-n-cheese cook-off last night. Event attendees tried mac-n-cheese from local chefs and voted on their favorite. Money raised from the event and a silent auction will help the shelter during this holiday season.
The official design for the new downtown hotel in Valdosta has been approved by the city’s historic preservation commission. The size of the hotel did not change, but the new design added columns, more gardens and green space to the plan. The building was also rotated so the entrance would face Bennie’s Alley.
A Gun-toting 78-year-old Georgia woman chased burglars from home this week. The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office says Elaine Stiehl was getting ready to take a nap when she heard a noise coming from the front of her house. Stiehl then loaded a pistol and found two men inside her home. Deputies were able to find the two suspects and their getaway driver traveling on Interstate 85 and charged them with burglary
Investigators in Tallahassee still don’t know where the World War II era bomb that was discovered in the College Town area on Wednesday came from. The bomb was safely detonated, and officials believe it could have been as old as the 1930s.
A Florida appeals court is upholding the conviction of a man who shot a Jacksonville teenager after an argument over loud music. On Thursday, the court rejected an argument from lawyers representing Michael Dunn that he was acting in self-defense when he killed Jordan Davis in November 2012. Dunn fired 10 times at the SUV Davis was riding in after the two argued over the loud music coming from the 17-year-old’s vehicle. Dunn was sentenced to life in prison.
