LOWNDES CO – The Lowndes County Emergency Management are urging the public to be aware of a scam volunteer group requesting money to remove debris.

Release:

AlertLowndes URGENT!: This is an important announcement from Lowndes County Emergency Management. We have received several reports of individuals claiming to be part of a volunteer group and requesting money to remove debris and other services. None of the volunteer groups operating in Lowndes County are asking for money to perform any service. They are here to help restore our community as a free service and out of the goodness of their heart. Unfortunately, some people choose to prey on those who have already been devastated and might be vulnerable to such scams seeming to offer help. We will not tolerate this behavior in Lowndes County nor let it undermine the legitimate efforts of many with a genuine heart for service. Do not give anyone money upfront for any service. This includes contractors who might be legitimately charging for services. If you hire a contractor, get an estimate in writing, do not pay for any services up front, and request to see a copy of their local business license. If you believe you have been a victim of one of the scams, you can report it to local law enforcement or call the Lowndes County EOC at 229-671-2790 and provide information so that it can be followed up on. We will continue to provide frequent updates using AlertLowndes and through the EMALowndes Facebook page. You may also call the EOC if you have questions or need information. The road to recovery will be long, but we will travel it together and won’t stop until everyone has made it to the end.
