Release:

On August 5, 2020, at approximately 11:48 pm., a citizen called 911 reporting that they saw a suspicious subject standing beside a vehicle in the 3100 block of Vanelle Drive, holding a rifle. When Valdosta Police Officers arrived on the scene, they observed Augustus Bellamy quickly take a rifle inside a residence, then come outside without it, and get into the passenger side of a vehicle that was leaving the residence. Officers stopped the vehicle to investigate the 911 call. Officers made contact with the homeowner of the residence that Bellamy took the rifle inside of, and they retrieved the rifle. While Bellamy was being detained, he advised officers that he had a handgun in his front pocket. Officers retrieved a revolver, along with a magazine for a 9mm firearm, from his front pocket. Officers recovered another firearm and marijuana from inside the vehicle. When the firearms were checked though GCIC/NCIC, the rifle and the revolver had been reported stolen.

Augustus Bellamy was transported to Lowndes County Jail, where he is being held for two counts of theft by receiving stolen property-felony.

The driver of the vehicle, Chantel Wade, was transported to Lowndes County Jail, for misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

“We are thankful for the citizen who called 911 about a person acting suspiciously with a rifle. Our officers responded quickly and thoroughly investigated the situation, resulting in three firearms being taken off of the street.” Chief Leslie Manahan
