S. Oak Street Murder Being Investigated

VALDOSTA, Ga. – On January 22, 2020, at approximately 7:47 p.m., officers with the Valdosta Police Department responded to a residence in the 700 block of South Oak Street, after a citizen called 911 and advised that a subject that had been shot.

Upon arrival officers found Rashawn Mays deceased at the scene. Detectives and Crime Scene Personnel responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. During the investigation, detectives determined that the victim was involved in a dispute with a person known to him when the offender produced a firearm and shot the victim. 

Detectives are still processing evidence in this case and the case is on-going. The victim has been transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations Medical Examiners Office, where an autopsy will be conducted at a later date.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims’ families at this time,” commented VPD Chief Leslie Manahan. “This is a horrible and unnecessary incident.  We encourage any members of the community to come forward with any information that they have.”
