VALDOSTA — A person riding a bicycle late Tuesday was struck by a tractor-trailer truck, killing the cyclist.

Aaron Todd Maze, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Valdosta Police Department Traffic Unit responded to a traffic fatality that occurred around 10:30 Tuesday night near the intersection of Madison Hwy and Winston Avenue in Valdosta.

Kevin Stephens, driving his Kenworth tractor-trailer truck, was traveling southbound on Madison Hwy approaching Winston Avenue. Stephens reported to police that a car was traveling northbound with its high beams on, which affected Stephens ability to see.

Stephens stated that he caught a glimpse of an object in front of him and tried to swerve to avoid a collision. The object Stephens saw turned out to be Maze, riding a bicycle south on Madison Hwy.  Stephens was not able to avoid a collision and the truck struck Maze and his bike.

The Valdosta Police Department Traffic Unit is conducting an investigation into this accident and no charges against Stephens have been filed at this time.
