VALDOSTA – According to the Georgia Department of Labor, Valdosta sees marginal rise in unemployment rate for October.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said that Valdosta recorded an unemployment rate of 3.8 percent in October, up one-tenth of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 3.4 percent.
“Georgia’s unemployment rate remains below the national average, but businesses face growing pressure, including finding and retaining top-tier talent,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “As we attract diverse companies across the state, we must remain focused on developing the skills needed to meet critical workforce demands without reallocating talent between industries. By prioritizing our labor force, we can further strengthen Georgia as a place where both businesses and individuals can thrive together.”
The labor force increased in Valdosta by 9 and ended the month with 63,344. That number went up by 605 when compared to October of 2022.
Valdosta finished the month with 60,967 employed residents. That number decreased by 9 over-the-month and went up by 355 when compared to the same time a year ago.
Valdosta ended September with 57,500 jobs. That number increased by 500 from September to October and went up by 700 when compared to this time last year.
In October, initial unemployment claims decreased by 232 (-50%) in Valdosta. When you compare October 2023 claims to October 2022, claims were down by 59 (-20%).
