LOWNDES Co. – First responders in South Georgia are getting a different response to recent police shootings.
In the past few weeks, many local agencies have received unexpected visits from families wanting to say thank you.
The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office says they’ve been getting phone calls, gifts, cards, and young visitors from the local community.
“It’s touching to see kids so young realizing there’s something going on in the world, and although they may not understand, it’s impacting them enough that they feel the need to do something positive,” says Capt. Stryd Jones, with the LCSO.
Capt. Jones says they’re thankful to be surrounded by a community that supports them.
Businesses have also expressed their love and support.
Last week, Coldwell Banker Premier Real Estate in Valdosta surprised the Sheriff’s Office with a gift basket.
“Just after everything happening around the country and in our own hometown last week, it hit home that not a lot of people support our law enforcement,” says Emily Johnson, with Coldwell Banker. “We thought it would be nice to show a good gesture back to our community to show we support them.”
Johnson says they came up with the idea to spread a positive message.
“A lot of people bring treats and goodies just to say thank you. During these trying times for everyone, that is tremendous moral support from our community that keeps our deputies uplifted and keeps everybody moving forward in a positive way,” adds Capt. Jones.
