VALDOSTA — Valdosta High School is proud to offer a new program, Students against Violence Everywhere (SAVE). The National Association of Students against Violence Everywhere is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing students with the information and resources necessary to make a positive difference in safety efforts in schools and communities. The students meet twice a week during advisement to discuss ways to help reduce conflict and violence in the community. Speakers from the community mentor the group to learn leadership skills as well as promote college and career awareness. The collaboration of stakeholders creates a safe place to talk and learn peaceful life skills. Students are under the advisement of Ricky Thomas, assistant principal.

The VHS SAVE group attended a national summit on March 21, 2014 in Raleigh, NC at North Carolina State University. The young men were able to participate in breakout sessions and hear from national keynote speakers who shared trainings on diversity, safety, conflict resolution, anti-bullying, and success. The overnight trip and attendance at this summit brought many ideas back to our community on how to work against violence. The trip was made possible by the founding sponsors of VHS SAVE: Chief Freddie Broome (Valdosta Fire Department), Chief Brian Childress (Valdosta Police Department), Pastor David Adams (Mt. Calvary Baptist Church), Pastor James White (Bethlehem Baptist Church), Pastor Clay Morgan (Morning Star Baptist Church), Mr. Percy Chastang (Adolescent Health & Youth Development), Bro. Leroy Butler (Woodlawn Forrest Church of Christ), Mrs. Joyce Evans, Pastor Chuck Owens (First Baptist Church), Mr. Jared Green (First Baptist Church), Mr. Justin Crenshaw (First United Methodist Church), Mr. John Lukens (community volunteer), Dr. Beverly Richardson-Blake (Valdosta State University),  Mr. E. Martin Roesch (VCS Superintendent), and Dr. Alvin Hudson (VCS Assistant Superintendent).
