VALDOSTA, GA – The Valdosta State volleyball team combined an outstanding season on the court with an equally impressive performance in the classroom in 2013, and the squad’s efforts were rewarded this week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, who named the Blazers as one of 676 AVCA Team Academic Award recipients for the 2012-13 season.

In recognition of Valdosta State volleyball’s collective 3.5 grade-point average in 2013, the Blazers joined a record number of teams to receive the honor, which was initiated during the 1992-93 year. The AVCA Team Academic Award honors both collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining no less than a 3.30 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.

“Too often athletic participation is associated with academic underachievement, and this stereotype is simply false when it comes to volleyball,” said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. “Couple the smarts represented by these teams with the competitive experience and team-focused training gained on the court, and we have a potent formula for future leadership! What a significant contribution that is by their coaches and schools.”
