On November 22, 2020, at approximately 10:47 pm, patrol officers with Valdosta Police Department responded to a building alarm at J.L. Newbern Middle School (2015 East Park Avenue). While investigating the alarm, officers found evidence that someone had forced entry into the school. A responding officer observed a subject, later identified as Sherman Golden, walking down one of the hallways. Officers and a Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit entered the school to search for the offender. Sherman concealed himself in a restroom at the school and refused officers’ orders to come out. The Lowndes County K-9 was utilized to locate and detain Sherman. Sherman was transported to Lowndes County Jail for the charges of burglary (Felony), damage to property (Felony), and obstruction (Misdemeanor).
