NASHVILLE, Ga. – Berrien County Sheriff Ray Paulk and his deputies are lucky to be alive.

“Yea, they don’t love you when you’re doing something like busting them,” Sheriff Ray Paulk said about being shot at during a home search. “Sunday evening we’d come out to execute a couple of warrants. One was on Bryan Street, and we secured two people who were at the residence. Entry was fine. Found some drugs, some marijuana, some money, some guns. Definitely a dealer.”

Demetric Collier and Roman Scurry were arrested and transported to the Berrien County Jail for intake. Once they were off the premises, the sheriff, deputies and investigators began processing the residence.

“One of our Tahoes was parked outside the residence and me and several other officers were outside,” Sheriff Paulk said. “Three or four shots just rung out real loud, around 8 p.m. Heck, we were looking off trying to figure out what direction it came from so we could pursue but we couldn’t tell. We saw our patrol vehicle had been struck twice, one shot was in the passenger side front door and the other was in the back hatch.”

“Yea, I just thank God none of us were hit,” Paulk told Valdosta Today. “It was closer than comfort, that’s for sure. And that’s never happened to me, not in my history. It makes me realize we’re obviously upsetting somebody and we’re just gonna come stronger and heavier than before.”

Sheriff Paulk and the community is asking for anyone with information about the shooting to call.

“There’s some fear amongst some people but we’re hopeful and we do have some leads,” Sheriff Paulk remarked. “We continued to serve our warrants and bagged and tagged the evidence. It was a good search warrant. Everything went okay, it just ended really scary. The cover of darkness was not on our side.
