Lowndes Board of Education

VALDOSTA — At the board work session on May 4, the Lowndes County Board of Education approved a modified 2015-2016 calendar that restores the instructional year to a full 180 days. The modified calendar adds two days to the 178 day calendar approved in February as follows:
One Instructional Day for Students – The first day of school will be August 6 instead of August 7 as previously approved. This allows 90 days of instruction first semester and will move the teachers’ first day of work to Friday, July 31.

One Inservice Day for Teachers – One inservice day will be added for teachers at the end of the year to allow additional time for professional learning, system and school meetings, and wrapping up the school year.

Board Chairman Brian Browning stated, “We are proud to be able to restore the calendar for the teachers and students of Lowndes County. The 2015-2016 school year will be the first one in eight years that has not included furlough of two to five days. This has been a priority of the board and a stated goal of mine since I was elected in 2010. A full calendar restores the pay for teachers and system employees and adds instructional time for our students.”
