CORDELE — A Cordele woman pled guilty to felony insurance fraud and two counts of making false statements.
Former Harvey’s cashier, 48-year-old Jan Smith filed the first false statement in August of 2013. Smith told the Cordele Police Department she was assaulted by her supervisor.
Later, she filed a workers’ compensation claim reporting she had injuries from the assault. Officials investigating the case realized she had lied based on the evidence.
In February of 2014, Smith was arrested and charged with workers’ compensation fraud. She pled guilty in the Crisp County Superior Court.
Smith received a sentence of five years probation for each felony county. She also must pay $1,850 to the State Board of Workers’ Compensation’s Enforcement Division for investigation costs.
