Albany > ASU Cheerleaders Sent Home for Fighting

ALBANY — The Albany State University cheerleading squad was sent home from a basketball tournament in Alabama after brawling with cheerleaders from another school.

The squad was sent home on Tuesday after fighting with cheerleaders from Tuskegee University during half time of the SIAC Basketball Tournament in Birmingham.  A video of the fight was posted on social media showing cheerleaders from both schools fighting.

The SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) of which both schools belong, issued a statement regarding the incident:

“The obligation to observe basic principles of sportsmanship and fair play extends to all participants at the SIAC basketball tournament. As a consequence of the incident on Tuesday, the cheerleading and dance teams from both Albany State University and Tuskegee University will not be permitted to participate in our tournament for the remainder of the week.”

The Tuskegee Golden Tigers’ won the game, 80-63 without further incident.
