VALDOSTA — The trial of members of Kendrick Johnson’s family has concluded with guilty verdicts and sentences handed down by Judge Mitchell.

The five family members, including Johnson’s mother and father, were sentenced after being found guilty of obstruction of the Lowndes County Courthouse in April of 2013.  They claimed it was a tactic to gain attention by law enforcement related to the death of their son at Lowndes High School in 2013 and subsequent investigation.  The case attracted national media attention.

Judge Mitchell sentenced the five to 1 year in jail, but then suspended the sentence as long as none of those convicted were arrested again within a year.  The Johnson family defense attorney had asked for the judge’s consideration for the “pain and suffering” endured by the family to date when handing down the sentence.
