VALDOSTA, Ga. – As more brick and mortar businesses are either closing or making major modifications in how they operate their business with technology, the struggles of Pier 1 Imports stands out.

When Valdosta Today called Pier 1 Imports, which was an 800 number, it took five minutes of pushing buttons for different departments and concerns, and when a human was finally reached she amiably asked what she could help VT. When asked if the Valdosta location was closing she asked for the zip code and after a brief pause said, “It doesn’t show that store is closing.”

Reports of Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing circulating, Pier 1 Imports announced in its Monday earnings statement that it plans to close up to 450 of its 942 stores.

Thousands will lose jobs, Business Insider reported.

Pier 1 Imports is also planning to cut 40% of its staff employed at its headquarters, which equals around 300 people, according to a Bloomberg report.

Competition with Wayfair and Walmart, and countless other growing companies that have either adapted to the technological age or been born from it are challenging brick and mortar businesses..
