LAKELAND – In an effort described by Walmart officials as an effort to sharpen “focus on portfolio management,” Walmart is shuttering 269 stores globally, including all of its small format Walmart Express stores.

Walmart announced last week it would close 154 U.S. locations, including 23 Neighborhood Markets, 12 Supercenters, seven stores in Puerto Rico, six discount centers and four Sam’s Club locations.

All 102 Walmart Express locations will close. The small format stores had been a pilot program since 2011.

The Lakeland Walmart Neighborhood Market will close for business January 28 along with seven other Georgia locations, according to Walmart.

Of the 115 stores the company will close outside of the U.S., 60 are in Brazil and have already closed. The company struggled to make a dent in the county, taking only five percent of sales that market. The remaining 55 locations are in other Latin America markets.

Walmart said it will be focusing primarily on its Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets moving forward. The company plans to open between 200 and 240 stores in 2016, including 50 to 60 Supercenters, 85-95 Neighborhood Markets and seven to 10 Sam’s Club locations.
