GBI investigates death of Georgia man, 9-year-old child

BROOKLET – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting the death investigation involving a 37-year-old man and a 9-year-old child.

At the request of the Brooklet Police Department, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting a death investigation involving two individuals in Brooklet, Bulloch County.

Preliminary information indicates that on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at about 7:45 p.m., law enforcement officers with the Brooklet Police Department and the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call reporting an unresponsive child locked in a vehicle at Brooklet City Park.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers made entry into the vehicle and found a child dead in the backseat with an apparent gunshot wound. A man was found dead in the front seat from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was found on his lap.

The adult has been identified as James Lee Mayo, age 37. The child has been identified as his 9-year-old daughter, Emily Grace Mayo.

The bodies will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Pooler for autopsies.

This investigation is active and ongoing.
