VALDOSTA — Scintilla Charter Academy has been authorized as an IB World School for its Diploma Programme.
Release:
VALDOSTA, GA — Scintilla Charter Academy has officially been authorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School for the Diploma Programme (DP), marking a significant milestone for the school and expanding world-class educational opportunities for students in South Georgia.
The authorization comes as Scintilla prepares to open its first year as a PK–12 school and reflects years of planning, professional learning, curriculum development, and collaboration among faculty, staff, scholars, families, and community partners.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is recognized worldwide for developing students who are knowledgeable, reflective, and internationally minded. Through a combination of coursework incorporating independent research, service, and interdisciplinary learning, students develop the skills needed to succeed in college, careers, and life.
While all IB World Schools meet the same internationally established standards, each school develops a program that reflects its unique mission and community. At Scintilla, the Diploma Programme has been intentionally designed to align with the school’s mission of empowering students through creativity, collaboration, inquiry, and critical thinking.
“This authorization represents much more than the addition of an academic program,” said Amanda Miller, Superintendent of Scintilla Charter Academy. “It reflects years of work, a shared vision, and a belief that children in our community deserve access to world-class opportunities. We are proud to offer a program that challenges students to think deeply, solve problems, communicate effectively, and apply their learning in meaningful ways.”
Unlike some schools that limit participation based on academic criteria, Scintilla’s program is designed to provide multiple pathways for students to engage in IB learning. SCA scholars may pursue the full IB Diploma, take individual IB courses, combine IB coursework with Dual Enrollment, and explore distinctive offerings such as Business Management, French or Spanish, Environmental Systems and Societies, Design Technology, and Visual Arts.
“What excites me most about the Diploma Programme is the way it develops students as thinkers and learners,” said Brooke Knight, Assistant Superintendent and Diploma Programme Coordinator. “Students are asked to ask questions, conduct research, make connections across disciplines, and engage with real-world issues. The skills they develop through that process will serve them well beyond high school.”
Beyond academics, the program emphasizes communication, collaboration, reflection, service, and the application of learning to authentic situations. Students are challenged to think critically, manage complex projects, consider multiple perspectives, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
“The Diploma Programme aligns perfectly with the culture we are building in the Upper School,” said Matt
McCoy, Dean of Upper School. “We want students to take ownership of their learning, pursue their interests,
and develop the confidence to navigate challenges and opportunities beyond graduation. The flexibility of
Scintilla’s program allows students to personalize their experience while building skills that will benefit them for
a lifetime.”
For Scintilla leaders, the true value of the program lies in the type of person it helps students become. “We often talk about preparing students for college, careers, and life,” Miller added. “What I love about IB is that it helps us do all three. The most important outcome is not the courses students take or the diploma they earn. It is their ability to think critically, communicate effectively, collaborate with others, and make a positive impact in the world around them.”
Founded on the belief that every child deserves a deeper learning experience, Scintilla Charter Academy serves more than 1,100 students in grades PK–12 and continues to expand opportunities that prepare students to thrive in an ever-changing world.
