The legal age to smoke cigarettes and e-cigarettes in the U.S. could rise to 21 after a new law was passed by Congress on Thursday, December 19 in hopes of fighting youth vaping problems.

Raising the age from 18 to 21 to purchase cigarettes, e-cigs and all other tobacco products could take effect nationwide in about nine months, Yahoo News reported.

President Trump, who has voiced his support of this law, will need to sign the legislation.

Nineteen states already have laws in place with 21 as the minimum age. While the minimum legal age varies from 15 to 24 across the world, the vast majority of countries have set the minimum age to purchase tobacco at 18, Yahoo News reported.
