ATLANTA, Ga. – The Georgia Senate has approved of a bill that gives families another option for body disposal, through aquamation. WSB-TV reports that the State Senator Bill Health sponsored the bill to clarify an eight-year-old alkaline hydrosis bill.

Aquamation is “an eco-friendly alternative to flame cremation and burial.” The website claims that through aquamation there are no direct emissions of harmful greenhouse gases, over 90% energy savings, and 20% more ash remains returned to the family.

The process is not unlike the natural process of bodies that are laid to rest in the soil. The body will begin to breakdown while in the mixture of 5% alkali and 95% water, leaving behind the bones that are then cremated.

The Georgia House is the next step for the proposed bill.
