LOWNDES — Lowndes County EMA warns residents about drifting smoke from fires in South Georgia and North Florida. Burn restrictions remain in effect.

Lowndes County, Georgia: Residents in Lowndes County may notice an increase in smoke across the area today and over the coming days. The smoke is drifting into the area from multiple fires burning in surrounding counties across South Georgia and North Florida. Smoke conditions may vary by location and time of day, and visibility can change quickly with wind direction.

Lowndes County Emergency Management encourages residents to be aware of the following potential impacts and safety precautions:

• Periods of heavier smoke may occur in some areas. Drivers should use caution, particularly in areas with reduced visibility.
• Visibility on roadways may be reduced at times. Motorists are encouraged to slow down and allow additional distance between vehicles.
• Individuals with respiratory sensitivities may be impacted and should consider limiting outdoor activity if smoke becomes heavy in their area.
• If smoke increases locally, residents are encouraged to keep windows and doors closed when possible.

Residents are also reminded that temporary burn restrictions remain in effect in Lowndes County until further notice due to ongoing drought conditions. With extreme drought conditions in place, outdoor burning should be avoided to help prevent wildfires and protect first responders. Residents are also asked to refrain from activities that could create sparks and potentially start a fire.
