SAVANNAH, Ga. – A Savannah personal injury attorney is recovering from a shark bite from a morning swim he took last weekend.

Gene Brooks was taking a dip around 9:30 a.m. in the Wilmington River Sunday when a shark took a bite out of his upper right arm and chest.

Brooks got off easy, with 23 stitches, and lots of lawyer jokes.

“It scared me, but I feel real lucky,” Brooks told Savannah Now, a day after the run-in with the shark. “It didn’t hit muscle, bone or blood vessels so I’m good to go.”

Brooks joked that the shark was “not guilty of a personal attack.”

“I don’t think it was trying to get me because it didn’t get a good bite,” he told Savannah Now. “I think there were probably other fish around that it was after.”

Brooks said he’d only been in the water about five minutes when he felt a “pow,” then saw teeth marks and blood on his arm.

Doctors estimated the shark was probably between four to six-feet long.
