JACKSONVILLE — A Jacksonville correctional officer has been sentenced to prison after he was found guilty of identity theft and wire fraud.

Harold Walbey III was sentenced to four years and three months in federal prison after he pleaded guilty in December of 2014.

Walbey, a former correctional officer at Jacksonville’s John E. Goode Pre-Trial Detention Facility stole the personal identities of inmates at the facility from 2010 to 2012.

Authorities say Walbey had 49 names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth of prisoners in the facility. He created debit cards and W-2 forms in their names and filed 38 different tax returns.

Authorities say he claimed more than $250,000 in fraudulent refunds and received over $110,000 as a result.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Internal Revenue Service and Federal Bureau of Investigation all worked on the case.
