FAIRBURN — A Fulton County Police Officer was shot and killed Wednesday in what is being described by authorities as an ambush.

The officer and others were attempting to protect residents early Wednesday morning in response to reports of gunshots in the neighborhood near Fairburn in Fulton County.

The officers were ambushed upon arrival, without warning, with one officer being fatally shot.  He was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital after 4:30 a.m Wednesday morning, according to published reports.  He was a 28-year police veteran.

A suspect was wounded in the gunfire exchange and was also taken to Grady for treatment.
