HINESVILLE — Despite threats around the world continuing to create concern, US Armed Forces are being trimmed.  Part of that downsizing is taking place at the home of the 3rd Infantry Division, Ft. Stewart, near Hinesville.

The Division’s 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team was inactivated during a ceremony Thursday morning, part of a drawdown in Army strength mandated by the current administration.

This is the seventh brigade combat team that the Army has shuttered since the downsizing began in June of 2013.  Four more combat teams are due to be cut by the end of 2015.  As of today, Ft. Stewart has but two remaining brigade combat teams, the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team and the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

This drawdown will result in the loss of about 900 service men and women at Ft. Stewart alone, with 17 of the 2nd Brigades 31 units being merged into the remaining brigades.

The 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, nicknamed the Spartan Bridge, was first established in 1917.  The 4th Brigade will assume that name and be reflagged as the 2nd.
