VALDOSTA – Teams and  volunteers are preparing for the First Annual Colton Shaw Scholarship Fund Sporting Clay Shoot at Southwind Saturday morning.

The event is to raise money for the Colton Shaw Scholarship Fund which will provide college scholarships for graduating seniors at Valdosta High School and Lowndes High School, said Penny Turner, a member of the scholarship committee.

Colton Shaw, 14, a freshman baseball player for the Valdosta Wildcats, died in March 2014 when he was struck by an errant throw during a game.

“I think the biggest thing is for us to keep Colton’s memory alive and to be able to do good things with this money,” Turner said. “Colton was all about helping other people and putting others before himself. He was an encourager, and I believe this fund will be able to encourage students and carry his name on for years to come.”

Twenty-nine teams will compete in the event, and over 70 volunteers will be on hand to coordinate the shoot.

“The outpouring of support for this day is remarkable,” Turner said. “Between spring break and Easter, people are taking time out of their busy schedules to remember Colton and raise money for the fund.”

Turner said the shoot still has for two or three more teams. To register, call (229) 563-1045.
