VALDOSTA — Lowndes County School Board Chairman Fred Wetherington gaveled in his last meeting Monday, December 15. Wetherington has been involved with the county schools most of his life, either as a student in the county schools – he’s a 1985 graduate of Lowndes High School – or as a school board member from 2004 to 2014, serving the last two years as chairman.
Wetherington was honored with a reception prior to the board meeting and was presented with a plaque and a framed newspaper article from 1984 picturing him as a student speaker when Lowndes High school was named a School of Excellence by Governor Joe Frank Harris.

“No matter where I go or what I do, I will be a part of Lowndes County Schools,” said Wetherington. He and his wife Teresa, as well as their three children, attended school in the district he served for the last 10 years. He has attended an estimated 220 school board meetings and seen approximately 5,000 students graduate from Lowndes High School during his tenure on the school board.

Wetherington, who chose not to seek re-election, will be replaced in the 2nd District seat by Eric Johnson in January. “We will miss Mr. Wetherington’s leadership and passion for education”, said Superintendent Wes Taylor. “Mr. Johnson does have big shoes to fill,”
