Blazer-Basketball PENSACOLA, FL – The Valdosta State women’s basketball team was unable to overcome a slow start at the UWF Field House in Gulf South Conference basketball action on Monday night and fell 67-53 to the West Florida Argonauts.

The loss was the fourth straight for the Lady Blazers, and dropped VSU to 10-12 overall, 5-11 in conference play. The Argonauts record improved to 14-7 after the win and 9-6 in against GSC opponents.

The Lady Blazers had difficulty finding the basket early, as the team connected for just four points in the first ten minutes of the contest. During that stretch, the Argonauts scored 19 points, eight of which came on layups by UWF forward Jasmine Wigfall.

Valdosta State put up a gutsy effort throughout the remainder of the contest and even pulled to within ten points with four quick points to open up the second half, but the early deficit proved to be too much to overcome.

Wigfall’s 9-for-11 effort from the floor was good for a team high 20 points on the night, while Brianna Williams and Raquel Miller chipped in with 13 points each.

The Argonauts produced a 46.7 shooting outing with a 28-for-60 performance from the field. UWF also won the rebounding war with 47 against Valdosta State’s 35.

Lady Blazer guard Brooke Satterfield delivered her best offensive outing of the season on Monday night, as the Watkinsville, Ga. native hit four of her six attempts from beyond the arc for a team high 12 points. Satterfield’s highest scoring games prior to Monday night’s contest were three six point outings, two against West Alabama and one against Shorter earlier this season. The total was only two points shy of her career high of 14, which she achieved twice last season.

April Thomas contributed with ten points on the night, while Amy Duke and Reshaundra Owens each added eight.

The Lady Blazers return home on Thursday night for a Gulf South Conference battle against the rival West Georgia Wolves. The tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at The Complex.
